Gethsemane: The Perfect Song for Easter

When I ask the primary children if they have a favorite song they want to sing, it's pretty much a 50% chance "Gethsemane" is the song they will pick. In fact, there is one little boy in primary whose hand will shoot up every time this question is posed, and if called on, he will excitedly (and not super reverently) shout, "Gethsemane!" EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Without hesitation.

I don't mind because I absolutely love this song! The lyrics are simple but powerful and the melody is beautiful and dynamic. My heart melts watching the strain on this little boy's face as he sweetly and sincerely sings this song about the Savior.

Another little boy in the same class, who also consistently names "Gethsemane" as his favorite song, will emphatically fist pump each time we come to what he shared was his favorite part: "...the hardest thing that ever was done, the greatest pain that ever was known, the biggest battle that ever was won, this was done by Jesus. The fight was won by Jesus!"

The first time I saw his little fist pump, I had to hold back tears. He wasn't doing it for attention and I'm not sure anyone else really noticed. He just couldn't contain the excitement and the power he felt at that point in the song.

If you haven't heard this song before, you need to give it a listen and consider adding it to your primary plans. I think it makes the perfect Easter Sunday musical number. In fact, our ward already has plans to have the primary sing it then because the Bishop loved it so much when he first heard the children singing it.

To help you teach your primary the lyrics to this beautiful song, I've shared the song visuals I created for our ward primary. I hope you find them helpful and enjoy singing this song as much as we do!
